Following the Bondi Beach shooting that killed 15 people, a wave of misinformation has flooded social media. This article analyzes and debunks the false narratives surrounding the incident and explains why certain claims about Pakistan are unverified and misleading.

Verified information from Australian authorities confirms the attackers were a father–son duo residing in New South Wales. The father, Sajid Akram, immigrated to Australia in 1998, and his son Naveed was born in Australia. Official statements have carefully avoided ascribing Pakistani nationality to them.

Despite these facts, numerous Indian media outlets and social media accounts 'falsely labelled the attackers as Pakistani nationals' or 'from Lahore'. This pattern, well documented by international media, appears designed to inflame geopolitical tensions and distract from domestic concerns in India.

Historical context supports this concern: in May, a major Indian Hindi news channel, Times Now Navbharat, broadcast a false dramatized report claiming "Indian forces enter into Pakistan", which was later debunked. International fact-checkers at the Reuters Institute observed that "a month’s worth of misinformation bombarded social media within a few hours", much of it amplified by Indian television. The Bondi narrative mirrors this established playbook.

The misinformation also harmed innocent individuals, such as Naveed Akram, who publicly pleaded for people to stop circulating his photo as the shooter. While Pakistani authorities condemn terrorism, some media voices continue propaganda efforts to smear Pakistan and deflect from their own domestic challenges.

These claims are false, misleading, or unverified. The international community must reject fabricated news designed to sow discord and damage Pakistan's reputation.
