Claim: This is the real face of Pakistan-one that the military establishment and its civilian facilitators would rather the world never see. While millions are forced to live amid poverty, pollution and collapsing public services, the ruling elite retreat into their own enclaves of privilege and luxury. But no wall is high enough to keep out the consequences of environmental neglect. Sooner or later, even their islands of comfort will be overwhelmed by the stench of the very decay they have chosen to ignore. Perhaps the greatest irony is that the very people who created this crisis know exactly where it is heading. Instead of cleaning up the consequences of decades of corruption, institutional neglect and failed policies, they quietly establish safe havens abroad for themselves and their families-while continuing to loot and plunder the country they leave behind.
