The United Nations peacekeeping remains one of the most visible, practical and cost-effective instruments available to the international community for maintaining international peace and security. In fragile situations, peacekeeping missions protect civilians, monitor ceasefires, deter violence, support political processes, facilitate humanitarian access and create space for dialogue. Their stabilizing role becomes even more important in volatile situations. In my view, these missions succeed most when they are grounded in clear political objectives, adequate resources, and genuine host-nation consent, and when they operate as part of a broader, integrated peacebuilding approach. They can be highly effective at reducing violence, preserving space for diplomacy, and enabling humanitarian access, but they do not substitute for a political settlement or local ownership. The most successful missions are those that combine robust protection mandates with strong civilian-focused programming, support for inclusive political processes, and a clear exit strategy. Nevertheless, criticisms persist: uneven funding, bureaucratic inertia, risk to personnel, and the occasional abuse within missions demand ongoing reform and accountability. To stay relevant in an era of hybrid threats and rapid political change, UN peacekeeping must accelerate rapid deployment, strengthen accountability mechanisms, improve coordination with humanitarian and development actors, and invest in gender equality and survivor-centered approaches. In short, peacekeeping remains a cornerstone of global securityтАФpractical, cost-effective, and indispensable when political will, security guarantees, and local ownership align.
